Market Volatility & Protecting Retirement Income

By George McFadden

Between persistent inflation, government shutdowns, and unpredictable geopolitical tensions, market volatility is the highest it’s been in recent memory.

This kind of uncertainty impacts everyone. However, if you’re like most retirees, you might be especially concerned about your retirement income dropping in the event of a market downturn.

There’s no easy fix for an uncertain market, but when you’re armed with the right strategies, you can safeguard your retirement income. Here’s a quick guide to navigating market volatility in retirement.

How Market Volatility Impacts Your Retirement Savings

If your retirement is still decades away, you might not be overly concerned with market volatility. The total value of your accounts may dip during a downturn, but there’s a good chance of a rebound before you retire.

However, if you are already retired or you plan to be soon, a market downturn could be incredibly risky. Your retirement accounts have less time to recover, and if you must take distributions during a downturn, your losses are compounded. This is because you’re withdrawing depreciated assets, and those assets won’t be able to grow again when market conditions improve.

Using Indexed Annuities to Guard Against Market Downturns

What if there were an investment that allowed you to benefit from market gains without exposure to market losses? It might sound too good to be true, but such an investment already exists: the indexed annuity.

What Are Indexed Annuities?

An indexed annuity is a type of contract with an insurance company. You make a payment or a series of payments to an insurance company, and your account accumulates interest based on the performance of a specific market index (like the S&P 500).

You may be able to withdraw your appreciated funds as a lump sum. However, many retired people choose to receive monthly payments so they can enjoy a consistent income stream.

How Indexed Annuities Shield Your Retirement Savings

Indexed annuities can’t guarantee a positive return on your investment. However, because they have a zero-loss floor, they prevent you from losing your investment. In the worst-case scenario, you don’t generate any income, but you don’t lose money either.

In exchange for shielding you from losses related to market volatility, annuity providers usually limit the growth potential of your investment. They often use one or more of these strategies:

  • Limiting participation rates: Only crediting a percentage of the investment’s growth to your account
  • Capping interest rates: Setting a maximum rate of return that may be credited to your account
  • Rate spread/margin: Subtracting a certain percentage from the investment’s growth

Unlike the investments in most standard retirement accounts, the money you put into an indexed annuity isn’t invested directly in the stock market. This means if market volatility leads to a downturn, your original investment won’t be lost.

Even in Turbulent Markets, Your Retirement Income Can Be Safeguarded

My mission at Retirement Protection Solutions is to help people retire stress-free. Believe it or not, stress-free retirement is possible, even during times of extreme market volatility.

But a peaceful retirement doesn’t happen by accident. The right balance of safer investments (like indexed annuities) and higher-risk, higher-reward investments is often the right choice, but the key to success is building a customized portfolio.
